In 2019, while living in Guatemala, Kim, who is the aunt who always gifts books for birthdays and Christmas, was preparing for a trip home and searching for a bilingual book about Guatemala for her nieces and nephews who live in North Carolina. Wayne uttered the words that changed the course of their free time: “Why don’t you write a book?” As former university professors, Wayne and Kim, were both published authors. Writing a children’s book seemed so much easier than a dissertation or refereed journal article. Little did they know.
Their story started in 1989 in Mexico where they studied at the Universidad de las Americas in Cholula, Puebla as part of a summer program with Western Carolina University. After a honeymoon to Mexico a year later, they graduated and moved to New Mexico where they both earned master’s degrees and doctorates in sociology at the University of New Mexico. When their sons, Forrest and Walker, were born, they were determined for them to be bilingual. They attended a dual language immersion school in Albuquerque.
Kim’s first teaching experience was at an elementary school in Mexico. She spent 25 years teaching in public and private schools and universities in Mexico and the United States. As a sociologist, her children’s books tend to be child-sized ethnographies. Wayne is a research criminologist. He has a great sense of humor that comes out in his children’s book.
When they started Vista Tranquila Publishers, LLC in 2019, they wanted to showcase Central American art and artists in the stories that they told. They have been committed to working with artists who have no or little experience illustrating books. They are proud to say that all of the books in the Guatemala Series have been printed in Guatemala.
En 2019, mientras vivía en Guatemala, Kim, que es la tía que siempre regala libros por cumpleaños y Navidad, estaba preparando para un viaje a casa y buscando un libro bilingüe sobre Guatemala para sus sobrinos que viven en Carolina del Norte. Wayne dijo las palabras que cambiaron el curso de su tiempo libre: «¿Por qué no escribes un libro?». Como habían sido profesores universitarios, Wayne y Kim eran autores publicados. Escribir un libro infantil parecía mucho más fácil que una tesis o una publicación académica. Poco sabían.

Bilingual Literacy/La alfabetización bilingüe
All of the books that Vista Tranquila Publishers, LLC, publishes are bilingual English/Spanish. Most of the world’s population speaks more than one language. Bilingualism is the norm, not the exception. Bilingual education has many cognitive benefits and certainly, being bilingual makes potential employees more competitive in the workplace and often with an extra salary incentive. A sometimes-overlooked benefit of bilingualism is the effect that it has on a person’s worldview, creating new understandings and increased empathy for others. Travelling is certainly easier for those who speak additional languages. Another significant benefit of being bilingual is that it creates new opportunities to expand one’s social networks and to meet new people. Some of our best friends in the world speak languages other than English. Being bilingual makes it easier to learn new languages, but it also helps to make you more proficient in your native language, since so many parts of speech have been culturally diffused. Finally, bilingualism is fun and helps to build self-confidence. Children love to share the words they have learned and practice their skills.
Todos los libros que publica Vista Tranquila Publishers, LLC, son bilingües inglés/español. La mayor parte de la población mundial habla más de un idioma. El bilingüismo es la norma, no la excepción. La educación bilingüe tiene muchos beneficios cognitivos y, ciertamente, ser bilingüe hace que los empleados potenciales sean más competitivos en el lugar de trabajo y, a menudo, con un incentivo salarial adicional. Un beneficio del bilingüismo que a veces se pasa por alto es el efecto que tiene en la visión del mundo de una persona, creando nuevas comprensiones y una mayor empatía hacia los demás. Cross-Cultural Experiences/Experiencias interculturales
When we think of the word culture, many images often come to mind. We may think about going to a museum or visiting an archaeological site or maybe attending a concert or an art exhibit. Language is an important aspect of culture. Of course, all of these things are tied to culture, but how could we do a better job of defining culture? Anthropologists don’t even agree! Some would say it is the set of all shared beliefs, values, customs, behaviors, and artifacts that are learned from generation to generation. Culture is a tool for human survival, but it is also constantly evolving. Culture is fragile. At Vista Tranquila Publishers, we celebrate culture in all its manifestations. We love to ask questions and learn local interpretations for the way things are. How interesting it is to learn the meanings of symbols, uses of artifacts, kinship structures, and the social bonds that tie people together. We love telling these stories! Hints about our cross-cultural experiences are peppered across the pages we print, our blog, and the illustrations we share.
Cuando pensamos en la palabra cultura, a veces nos vienen a la mente muchas imágenes. Podemos pensar en ir a un museo o visitar un sitio arqueológico o tal vez asistir a un concierto o a una exposición de arte. La lengua es un aspecto importante de la cultura. Por supuesto, todas estas cosas están relacionadas con la cultura, pero ¿cómo podríamos definirla mejor? Ni siquiera los antropólogos se ponen de acuerdo. Creative Storylines/Historias creativas
In one of our favorite movie lines, a character playing the role of Geoffrey Chaucer, an English poet and author from the Middle Ages, defines his profession by exclaiming, “Yes! Yes, I lied. I am a writer. I give the truth scope!” We take our observations and we transform them into fictional accounts that describe cultural observations from our travels and experiences. Blending factual details with fictional creations, we apply hyperbole and sometimes humorous accounts that guide our readers to imagine themselves in the lives of the characters we present. Repeatedly during our creative processes, we have returned to the same basic premises – just tell the story! We hope to engage the reader and guide them to feel the emotions of the characters using colorful and compelling illustrations to make the experiences come alive. This is what we strive to do.
En una de nuestras frases favoritas de una película, un personaje que hace el papel de Geoffrey Chaucer, poeta y escritor inglés de la Edad Media, define su profesión exclamando: «¡Sí! Sí, mentí. Soy escritor. Doy alcance a la verdad». Tomamos nuestras observaciones y las transformamos en relatos de ficción que describen observaciones culturales de nuestros viajes y experiencias. Mezclando detalles factuales con creaciones ficticias, aplicamos hipérboles y a veces relatos humorísticos que guían a nuestros lectores para que se imaginen a sí mismos en la vida de los personajes que presentamos. A lo largo de nuestro proceso creativo, hemos vuelto una y otra vez a las mismas premisas básicas: ¡contad la historia! We are committed to promoting literacy. Towards this end, we have carefully selected several organizations to support in their effort to improve the lives of children. For every hardcover children’s book that we sell through the website, we will donate one book to one of our partner NGOs.
